Do you remember Valkyria Chronicles? That Japanese game that was essentially X-Com in a very anime version of the Second World War? That game whose PC version was released almost a decade after the console version. Well, a sequel to the game was announced for consoles, so Valkyria Chronicles 4 will continue the adventure on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch. The possibility of a PC version is not excluded, even if it will happen in 2024. You may wonder why it has the number “4” in the name since it’s a sequel to a game that originally doesn’t have a number. The answer is simple, 2 and 3 were PSP games, a platform that sadly is gone. The announcement of the game was accompanied by a trailer with half of the gameplay and half of the producers’ explanations about the ideas they have for the game.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 will keep the gameplay features of its predecessors. You will have tactical combat on various battlefields, from a slightly simplified version of Europe in the Second World War in a more anime version. This time you will have cold weather, snow and that dog that people are spamming all over the internet. A new Grenadier class has been added, but also actions such as “Last Stand” and larger battles.
The story will begin in 1935 in the same parallel universe where the first game of the series unfolded in the midst of the European conflict between the Atlantic Federation and Eastern Imperial Alliance. This time we’re going to have a whole new cast of characters: young commander Claude Wallace, heavy weapons expert Riley Miller, the stubborn Darcsen Raz, sniper Kai Schulen and many others. They will be guided in battle with the new generation of BLiTZ, which will combine strategy elements, RPG and third-person shooter in real time.
Being a strategy-RPG game, you will have the ability to take control of your team of soldiers on the battlefield, so you will have to work that tactical mind of yours in order defeat your enemies and complete your missions. This can change with each mission, so adaptability will play a big role in the strategic gameplay. Depending on the situation, you can choose different characters with different skills so they can fit each scenario. When you’re not fighting, you will also have the possibility to talk with allies and purchase new items.
The typical graphic layout of the series will be brought to a new level with the new CANVAS Graphics Engine and the game’s soundtrack will be provided by Hitoshi Sakimoto, the “house maker” of the series. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is expected to appear on March 21, 2018.
