Crackdown 3 was one of the special games in Microsoft’s presentation at E3 2017. Why? For the simple reason that the open world shooter created by Sumo Digital is the only major title in the Microsoft portfolio to launch on the same day as Xbox One X, being optimized for the new console model. It was originally scheduled for November 7, 2017, but the release date was cancelled, the reason being to give Sumo Digital, Reagent Games and Cloudgine production studios enough time to complete and balance all the elements of the game, both single-player and multiplayer cooperative and competitive components.
Crackdown 3 is a third person shooter open world whose campaign is done by Sumo Digital, as mentioned above, with the popular actor Terry Crews to play commander Jaxon, the hero of the game, which is a great addition to the game. The multiplayer game called Wrecking Zone will focus on the destruction of the environment, using cloud computing developed by Cloudgine.
What is really interesting about the game is that everything in the environment is built with real structures and everything is destructible. That sounds pretty awesome like if you’re having a bad day, if you can’t blow things up in real life, at least do it in Crackdown 3. Thanks to the awesomeness of Microsoft’s cloud technology, there will be different servers able to process power to enable full destruction. What does that mean to you? Well, you can destroy cities as much as you like. Sounds pretty much like playing God. However, the feature is available only to the competitive multiplayer version of the game, leaving out the single player or co-op that will have a limited level of destruction (boo hoo). Either way, I’m still hooked on the idea of blasting holes in the walls and making my own path through any building I like.
The character definitely shows superhuman jumping by jumping from building to building and the ability to slam everything, as well as some kickass gunplay. The environment is your best friend. You can use it to your own advantage by throwing anything or almost anything you like at your enemies. You have a variety of weapons at your disposal, from a pistol to a machine gun that can fire mini rockets, thus causing some massive destruction around you. There will also be a levelling system that will allow you to improve your abilities depending on your play style. The game benefits from a non-linear campaign which means that you will be free to explore the entire city and go wherever your heart desires and take your own decisions. But do expect A LOT of explosions. They will happen, no matter what you do.
We would also like to say welcome back to Crackdown’s agility orbs. Those glowing balls that if collected they will increase your abilities. Their number is in the hundreds and they are hidden throughout the city, many of them being hard to reach.
Essentially, Crackdown 3 follows the same formula as the previous games which are chaos and destruction and a super-policeman in a futuristic world. The game has been a long time coming and I hope this time Microsoft will deliver its promise. Crackdown 3 will be released in the spring of 2018, for Xbox One (with Xbox One X support) and PC (Windows 10).
